In my author’s note for The Women of Chateau Lafayette I wrote that at the New York Historical Society, in a box of Beatrice Chanler’s papers, I found unaddressed love letters tucked into a Valentine folder with a note that identified them as being from Maxime Furlaud. Recently I reviewed an email I sent at the time of the discovery. What I said at the time is that I’d found these letters near the note and believed that they went together. I was then able to corroborate this with other evidence, but want to be precise.
