Mainstream Short Stories I knew that any minute my mom would
start crying and would call our priest, Father Hedges. Then my dad would get the shotgun down from
the closet and go over to David's house and shoot him for even thinking about
having sex with his little girl. I
could picture the whole upcoming tragedy with complete clarity. Jolie looked down at the rabbit who was
on a towel in my laundry basket and
folded her arms in front of her.
"Maxi, you can't keep him.
You'll be in such trouble."
But I could see she was weakening.
I pulled her hand down and put
it on the soft brown fur. She petted
him a while, then she went and got
some bandages. Jolie watched
after the rabbit long after I had gone to sleep that night. Normally, Emily would be charmed by
John's exuberant display and his dashing dimpled smile, but at this moment
the charm of the dimples are lost on her.
She doesn't look at the ring.
Instead, she swallows, sets her fork down and says, "I told you I
didn't want a ring." The delivery
is brutal and she knows it. She even
considers apologizing, but she's too angry. |
